Objectives & Context

The short but strategically important road section from Vahun to the Sierra Leone border completes the cross-border road link between Lofa County in Liberia and Kailahun District in Sierra Leone. As the final segment in a chain of EU-funded road investments across both countries, this section was critical to establishing the full Mano River Union cross-border corridor. The border area is characterised by dense tropical forest, numerous small watercourse crossings, and communities with particularly limited access to services — making design quality and community consultation especially important.

Our Approach & Solution

TSC Global delivered engineering design and construction supervision for this final segment, ensuring design continuity with upstream road sections delivered under separate contracts. Particular attention was given to the design of the border crossing infrastructure and the transition to Sierra Leonean road standards at the interface. Community engagement activities addressed concerns of border area residents regarding construction access, temporary displacement, and post-construction maintenance arrangements. Environmental management plans were aligned with EU requirements and Liberian EPA standards.

Results & Impact

Completion of the Vahun–Sierra Leone border section established the first fully rehabilitated all-weather road connection between Lofa County and Kailahun District, completing the northern Mano River Union corridor. The border crossing has since become an active commercial and passenger crossing point, contributing to regional economic integration between Liberia and Sierra Leone and enabling communities previously isolated by poor infrastructure to access services and markets across the border.
