Objectives & Context
Phase II of the Mano River Road programme extended rehabilitation from the Sierra Leonean border crossing to the key junction town of Kenema, covering approximately 95 km of road in varying states of deterioration. Sierra Leone's topography — characterised by steep gradients, laterite soils prone to erosion, and high annual rainfall — created specific design challenges around slope stability, erosion control, and drainage adequacy. Coordination with Phase I works on the Liberian side was essential to ensure geometric alignment and design standards were consistent across the border.
Our Approach & Solution
TSC Global provided integrated design and supervision services for Phase II, maintaining coordination with the Phase I team to ensure cross-border consistency. Special attention was given to the design of cut slopes, retaining structures, and erosion control measures given Sierra Leone's challenging terrain. Supervision was structured with a Resident Engineer and site-based inspectors supported by mobile laboratory testing units, enabling timely response to ground conditions discovered during earthworks. Community liaison officers ensured ongoing engagement with roadside communities throughout construction.
Results & Impact
Completion of Phase II, in conjunction with Phase I, restored full year-round connectivity of the Mano River Road corridor for the first time since the 1990s. The restored route is now a principal trade artery for the Mano River Union countries, reducing transport costs for agricultural exports by an estimated 40% and improving access to health and education services for over 200,000 people living along the corridor.
