Objectives & Context
The Ganta–Yekepa road in Nimba County serves as the primary corridor for iron ore haulage from ArcelorMittal's Yekepa mine to the national road network and export terminals. The route carries some of the heaviest axle loads in the Liberian road network and had experienced severe pavement distress under mining traffic. Rehabilitating a road under active heavy mining haulage operations — while simultaneously meeting the requirements of the AfDB and private sector mining company co-financier — created an unusually complex technical and commercial environment demanding a supervision team with experience in both public infrastructure and heavy industrial context.
Our Approach & Solution
TSC Global provided engineering design and construction supervision services, developing pavement structures specifically engineered for the high axle load environment generated by ore haul trucks. Design included detailed traffic loading analysis, mechanistic-empirical pavement structural design, and reinforced bridge structures at the major crossings. A traffic management protocol was negotiated with ArcelorMittal to phase haulage operations around pavement curing periods, protecting the new pavement from premature damage. Supervision maintained a permanent presence at multiple active work fronts throughout the construction period.
Results & Impact
The Ganta–Yekepa road was successfully rehabilitated to a standard capable of sustaining the heavy mining haulage traffic that defines the corridor. Pavement performance monitoring in the two years post-completion confirmed that the design was performing within predicted parameters. The project established TSC Global's reputation as a technical leader in heavy-haul road infrastructure in Liberia and supported subsequent expansion of ArcelorMittal's mining operations in Nimba County.
