Objectives & Context

Ghana's export diversification strategy identifies horticulture, high-quality cocoa, and aquaculture as key sectors with strong growth potential, but competitiveness is hampered by post-harvest losses, inconsistent product quality, weak compliance with international sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) standards, and limited market intelligence. USAID's COMPETE programme sought to address these structural barriers through a combination of technical assistance, private sector partnerships, and policy advocacy — requiring a technical team with deep expertise in export supply chain management and international trade compliance.

Our Approach & Solution

TSC Global served as a technical sub-partner on the COMPETE programme, leading the market access and trade compliance component. Activities included SPS compliance gap assessments at the firm level, design and delivery of training programmes on EUREPGAP and GlobalG.A.P. certification, support for industry associations to engage with export certification bodies, and facilitation of buyer-seller matching programmes connecting Ghanaian exporters with European importers. TSC Global also contributed to policy dialogue on improving Ghana's phytosanitary institutional framework.

Results & Impact

Over the programme period, TSC Global's component supported 340 firms to achieve or progress towards international certification, with 78 firms gaining new export market access. Horticulture export volumes to the EU increased by an estimated 22% among programme beneficiaries, contributing to USAID Ghana's export value growth targets.
