Chancellor Angela Merkel hosts summit in Berlin for Compact with Africa
The impact of the G20's "Compact with Africa" can already be felt on the continent, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a summit in Berlin with leaders of 12 African nations on Tuesday, praising the German-led initiative launched last year.
"It was not just about talking about Africa, but with it," Merkel said as she addressed the conference. "The Compact with Africa follows a different approach, a new approach - it is a type of partnership on an equal footing, aiming to be sustainable and to benefit all equally."
"Besides strengthening Africa as a place of investment, it is also important to establish fair trade relations between Europe and Africa," Merkel said.
The meeting is dedicated to assessing the effects of the large-scale G20 project, launched under the group's chairmanship by Berlin to boost Africa's economy and infrastructure. Egyptian leader Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, Rwandan leader Paul Kagame and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali are also present.
"This conference expresses that we want to live and breathe partnership and cooperation," Merkel said.
